Alabama GOP Rep. Martha Roby won’t seek another term

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Republican U.S. Rep. Martha Roby is not running for reelection in 2020.

Roby’s announcement Friday makes her the second House GOP woman to announce she will not seek another term. Only 13 of the 197 current House Republicans are women.

The five-term congresswoman from Montgomery said in a statement that she is forever grateful to the people of Alabama’s Second District. She said that during her tenure they have delivered “incredible results for our military, veterans, agriculture community and the unborn.”

Roby did not comment on future plans.

She drew primary challengers in 2018 after angering some Republicans in 2016 when she said Trump’s lewd comments about women — captured on an “Access Hollywood” tape — made him unacceptable as a candidate. But Roby easily won that election in the safe Republican district.
