Adults 50 and older can get free ukulele classes at the Elwin Mussel Center two times a week.
The classes are offered each Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The program is a way for adults to learn something new. It is being offered through The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Departments' Active Aging Committee.
The City of Santa Maria owns Five Baritone Ukulele. The class originated at the Maldonado Center for Kids, then expanded to the senior center.
Local music teacher, Joe Payne leads participants in the basics of strumming and playing their favorite songs.
"You build a knowledge and every week you can learn a little bit more push yourself and the whole time you're learning songs you like or learning to play melodies and harmonies and chords just being a musician,” Payne said.
The class has been going on for four weeks.
All skill levels are welcome, and participants may bring their own ukulele or borrow one.
