The Federal Drug & Administration has announced that the drug used for type 2 diabetics called Metformin may contain traces of contaminants that may cause cancer.

Metformin helps control blood sugar. Metformin containing medicines are available by prescription only and are used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The medicine helps the body respond better to the insulin it makes naturally, decreasing the amount of sugar the liver makes, and decreasing the amount of sugar the intestines absorb from food.

Metformin-containing medicines are available as single-ingredient products and also in combination with other drugs used to treat diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the most malignant diseases of the 21st century. The World Health Organization predicts that diabetes would be the seventh most leading cause of death by 2030.
