Six residents of a San Francisco Bay Area nursing home have died from the coronavirus.

Alameda County health officials said Wednesday the six deaths were among nearly 60 cases among staff and residents at at the Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hayward.

In Southern California, Riverside County health officials said 84 patients were moved from the Magnolia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after much of the staff failed to show up for work.

At least five staff members have become infected there.

Residents at nursing homes are especially susceptible to the virus. That reality has state officials considering using the giant Navy hospital ship Mercy as a temporary spot for some nursing home residents.
