According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, companies holding a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California reported nearly 2 million test miles during the most recent reporting period.

The DMV says it received 63 annual reports from each company. These reports summarize the disengagements (technological failures) reported during testing, circumstances or testing conditions, and the total miles traveled in autonomous mode on public roads. In most occasions, a safety driver is inside the vehicle during the test drive.

Companies that submitted a report include Waymo, Apple, Subaru, Toyota, Ford and Samsung.

Currently, 55 companies have valid permits to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver and six have a permit for driverless testing.
