The Poly Royal Rodeo, held as part of Open House events at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, starts this Friday, April 13.

Last year, the two-day event was canceled on day one because of rain, but it was still considered the largest collegiate rodeo in the nation. Organizers expect even larger crowds this year at Spanos Stadium.

"It was just electric. You walk in and there’s just people everywhere. A solid wall that you can’t even tell one person from another and it was the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of," said Cal Poly Rodeo member Cassidy Barnes.

The Cal Poly Rodeo team is excellent and has a storied history.

Since the inaugural College National Finals Rodeo nearly 70 years ago, Cal Poly’s student athletes have won more national titles than any other college rodeo program, with 45 titles.

This year, the women’s team is number one in the West Coast region.

"A lot of our students, you’ve got to coach them down a little bit before they ride in there and hear that crowd of 10,000 on their feet screaming," said coach Ben Londo.

Tickets are on sale now. They’re $20 for students, $25 for general admission and $40 for chair-back seats. Click here to purchase tickets.
