Police collect hundreds of firearms at Santa Barbara gun buyback

Santa Barbara police report collecting 260 firearms during an anonymous gun buyback event on Saturday, May 12, at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Those who turned in functioning handguns, shotguns and rifles were given $100 Smart & Final Supermarket gift cards. Those who turned in functioning California-classified assault weapons received $200 Smart & Final gift cards.

Police say they handed out more than $23,000 worth of gift cards and collected 99 handguns, 107 rifles, 49 shotguns, and 5 assault weapons. 

Police also gave away free gun locks at the event.
