Students at two elementary schools in Lompoc are getting help understanding money skills through hip hop.

The Pockets Change hip hop finance workshop is at La Canada Elementary School in Lompoc this week. It was at La Honda Elementary last month.

6th grade students are getting tips on the basics of managing finances, planning for college and preparing for the workforce. Instructors combine music and visual learning to leave students with a lasting sense of economic restraint.

"It’s amazing how unaware we all are of the financial decisions we make everyday," said Pocket Changes instructor Dyalekt. "I’ve had students six or seven years old come up and tell me ‘I’m bad at money.’ I don’t want anyone to think that they’re bad with money."

Dyalekt also helps kids use rhymes to write their own biographies and cover letters.
