Posted

The Isla Vista Community gathered in mourning Wednesday night to remember the six University of California, Santa Barbara students killed in a massacre that happened on May 23, 2014.

"We come out here not only to commemorate the individuals that we lost and commemorate everything they could have achieved and everything they did achieve while they were here and throughout their lives but to make sure no lives will be lost unwillingly," Brooke Kopel, a UCSB student, said.

Richard Martinez, the father of victim and San Luis Obispo High School graduate Christopher Martinez, spoke at the remembrance ceremony that took place at Storke Hall Wednesday night. His son was 20-years old when he was shot and killed.

Since his son’s death, Martinez has become an advocate for gun safety and is now a spokesperson for the national organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
