Santa Maria officials propose plan to alleviate Costco traffic

City officials in Santa Maria are developing a proposal to modify roads near Costco to cut down on traffic congestion.

Currently, motorists can only enter the north parking lot if they are driving North on Bradley Road. If they are driving south, they have to travel around the median, adding to traffic problems. Officials said the Bradley Road and Meehan Street intersection can cause delays during peak commute times.

Residents said the parking lot makes it nearly as difficult to get out as it is to get in.

The city is proposing a plan to take out the center median and create a way for southbound traffic on Bradely Road to turn left into the entrance, instead of having to drive around.

"I think it’s going to improve the circulation at Costco," said Steve Kahn, Public Works Director. "Will it handle it at the peak our? No. But I think it will greatly improve the situation."

Officials project construction on Bradley Road will take around three months.
