Woman dies in overnight car crash on Highway 101 in Montecito

A woman is dead following a crash on Highway 101 in Montecito.

The California Highway Patrol said that a 31-year-old man from Mission Viejo was driving on Highway 101 southbound at 1:40 a.m. Saturday when the car left the roadway just before the Olive Mill Road off ramp. Officers said that the car traveled down an embankment and struck a streetlight and a tree.

The car’s passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released. The driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Officers believe drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash. The weather was clear at the time.

Highway 101 was closed for about three hours during the investigation.
