Man arrested after Carpinteria standoff

Posted

Deputies used tear gas Monday to remove a man they say did not belong in a Carpinteria home.

They say 46-year-old Brandon Wayne Cheek of Santa Barbara was trespassing and in violation of a domestic violence restraining order at a home on Padaro Lane.

Once law enforcement arrived around noon, Cheek barricaded himself inside the home. No one else was inside.

The sheriff’s office and CHP surrounded the home. Authorities tried for more than an hour to get Cheek to surrender but he wouldn’t come out.

Eventually, a decision was made to deploy tear gas into the bedroom where Cheek had barricaded himself, the sheriff’s office said. Cheek was taken into custody soon afterward.

Deputies say Cheek had outstanding warrants for first-degree burglary, robbery, intimidating a witness, felony domestic violence and violating a domestic violence restraining order. He was also booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of an additional domestic violence restraining order violation and delaying or obstructing a peace officer.
