Ancient remains of Native American man returned to San Miguel Island

Posted

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians has returned the ancient remains of a Native American man, who died 10,000 years ago, to a burial site on the San Miguel Islands.

The remains of the man known as "Tuquan Man" were discovered exposed and eroding in 2005 on the island.

He was taken out of the burial grounds to keep from eroding more and falling into the sea.

Scientists say he has a significant relationship to American Indian groups and the culture on the Channel Islands.
