A 5-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital Monday after being hit by a vehicle near Lompoc.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, it happened at about 1:15 p.m. on the 3600 block of Via Gala in the Mission Hills area.

Fire officials say when firefighters arrived on scene, the boy was in the street.

He was checked out and taken by ambulance to a nearby school and then airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with what were described as moderate injuries.

Officials say the driver was not physically injured, but was distraught over what had occurred.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.

Fire officials remind drivers to slow down and watch out for children, especially during the summer months.
