Free beach wheelchairs to stroll along Santa Barbara County beaches

Posted

Beach wheelchairs will be available for public use on Santa Barbara beaches, county officials announced Monday.

The county parks division says four versatile, sand-friendly beach "De-Bug" wheelchairs will be free-of-charge and first-come-first-serve at Arroyo Burro, Goleta and Jalama beaches, and Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Preserve.

The wheelchairs are stainless steel and made for all terrains. The wheels are designed with a suspension system that keeps all four wheels on the ground when riding across uneven terrain.

The county says anyone who wishes to try these wheelchairs out should bring someone who can help them.

The wheelchairs were funded through California Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail Grants program, which comes from specific license plate sales and donations from "Protect Our Coast and Oceans Fund."
