Lompoc man begins effort to clean up homeless community

Posted

Community members in Lompoc are calling on the city to clean up the riverbed after collecting stolen carts around town.

Tyler Santos says he has seen the increasing problem of homelessness and associated trash in the area.

Shawn DeMalcolm and Planting Seed, a nonprofit organization, say they have removed more than 3,500 pounds of trash from the riverbed.

"We need as much help as we can get," said Santos. "We’re trying to work with Vandenberg right now, we have a couple of connections there, and they need volunteer hours for their men."

Santos says they filed a business tax license for the city to do the work. Until then, residents have been collecting abandoned shopping carts around the city.

Police officer recommend contacting Lompoc Police first for anyone who wants to help.
