Safe and Sane fireworks go on sale in many communities starting Thursday.
On the Central Coast, these fireworks are allowed only in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Guadalupe, Arroyo Grande, Oceano, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Templeton, and San Miguel.
Typically, fireworks can be used only on July 4 and the fine for setting off fireworks illegally is around $1,000.
"Every booth, every sale, the booth is supposed to put one of these inside the bag and it’s the rules from the city detailing when you can use the fireworks and that’s only to be used on the 4th of July during a 12-hour span between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.," said Mark van de Kamp, Public Information Officer for the City of Santa Maria.
In Santa Maria, there are 24 fireworks booths set up around the city. Sales of the fireworks benefit local non-profit groups, bands, sports teams, and civic organizations. For many of them, it’s their biggest fundraiser of the year.
