DMV introduces online application for driver’s license

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is now offering an online option for applying for a driver’s license or identification card.

All customers have to do is create an account, fill out an application and verify their identity with an active email and phone number – and they can do so in the comfort of their home.

"People used to come into a field office, you had to fill out the paper application," explains DMV spokesperson Jessica Gonzalez. "What this is doing is just reducing that. We will no longer have that paper application. It will all be electronic."

You can even choose to be an organ donor or begin the voter registration process from your mobile device. This same process is also available at touchscreen terminals at DMV field offices but doing it at home could save you 15 minutes or more.

"We’re finding at some of our really busier offices, we only have so many terminals that you can fill that out on. Sometimes you are actually waiting just to go up to use the terminals. This will definitely reduce the time because you have already completed that step," added Gonzalez.

The DMV recommends you make an appointment anytime you are looking to pay a visit.

If you don’t have a phone number and email to verify your identity, you would have to start and finish the process in person at a DMV field office.
