A man was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train in the Montecito area Thursday morning, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Officials say it happened at around 6:45 a.m. near Highway 101 and Olive Mill Road.

Police say there were passengers on board the train at the time. They were able to disembark while the investigation was ongoing.

Officials with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, including the coroner, were requested at the scene.

Police estimated the delay of the train to last until about 9:30 a.m., depending on what was found during the investigation.

Sheriff’s officials say the train was heading northbound. The conductor reportedly saw the man walking on the tracks, but was unable to stop the train in time.

The area where the person was hit is the same area where law enforcement was on scene overnight looking for residential burglary suspects.
