A wanted man is behind bars after a standoff with law enforcement Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara.

According to Sgt. Todd Johnson, police were called to the 300 block of West Arrellaga Street around 1 p.m. for a fight involving two men, one wielding a machete while the other had a bat.

Johnson said the man with the machete fled into a nearby apartment complex. Police were able to identify him, though his name is not being released.

He was deemed a significant threat with ties to a local gang and SWAT was activated. A portion of the apartment was evacuated and adjoining residences, parking lot, and street were blocked off.

The sheriff’s department and K-9 unit also assisted. Authorities made contact with the suspect and were able to convince the suspect to come down the stairs from the apartment complex.

He became uncooperative, but law enforcement was still able to arrest him. He was booked on a felony warrant and will likely face additional charges.

No one was injured. Johnson said additional information would be provided by the Santa Barbara Police public information officer.
