Cal Poly San Luis Obispo hosted this years Better Together teacher summit in San Luis Obispo.

This is part of a statewide effort to bring teachers together and advance their education abilities.

Organizers said after teachers finish their teaching credential they only have about 7 or 8 years before the material they learn gets outdated.

The summit was a way for teachers to stay relevant and to address the teacher shortage.

"Part of why we have a shortage of teachers is we’re not retaining teachers," said Kevin Taylor , director of school of education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. "Good in-service teacher education, good professional development for teachers helps to feel on top of their profession, feel good in the classroom, feel good in what they’re doing and stay in the profession."

Organizers said they estimate up to 10,000 teachers will take part in the annual summit.
