Santa Maria students heading back to school Monday morning will be greeted with encouraging messages written on the sidewalk.

Adam Elementary School staff met up Sunday afternoon to cover sidewalks throughout the school’s campus with encouraging messages like "welcome back" and "looking smart!"

The inspirational messages are meant to make students feel welcome and safe at school proved to be successful at the start of last year’s school year.

"They were astonished. They were stopping along the way to read each message, reading each message to their little brothers and sisters who couldn’t read, translating them for their parents if their parents spoke Spanish. It was a really magical moment last year and we’re hoping to do that again this year."

Welcome signs and balloons will add to the festive feel.
