A plaque in honor of the woman responsible for building a downtown San Luis Obispo bridge was dedicated Friday.

In 1927, Queenie Warden had a bridge built behind her business on Higuera St. to connect it with Monterey St. on the other side of San Luis Creek.

That section of Monterey St. between Chorro and Broad is now Mission Plaza, but the Warden Bridge still connects the two sides of the creek and is a popular pathway for pedestrians.

Queenie Warden was a prominent businesswoman and civic leader during her time. She was a founder of the Women’s Club and in 1917, she was the first woman in San Luis Ob?ispo to run for mayor, losing by just 81 votes. In 1918, the San Francisco Chronicle named her one of California’s Distinguished Women.
