Governor Jerry Brown on Monday signed a bill that gives schools the authority to provide optional curriculum on the use and distribution of sexually explicit material via social media and cellular devices.

AB 1868, introduced by Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo), will be an additional component of school districts’ sexual health education. The optional curriculum would teach students the risks and consequences of creating and sharing sexually sensitive material.

The goal is to fight human trafficking.

According to Cunningham’s office, the bill came in response to a situation in San Luis Obispo County in which a group of students was trading nude photographs in exchange for drugs.
