Morro Bay pirate celebrates ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’

Wednesday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so we caught up with Morro Bay’s very own "Pirate Steve."

He says the idea for the day was born back in 1995 in Albany, Oregon.

John "Ol’ Chumbucket" Baur and his friend, Mark "Cap’n Slappy" Summers, reportedly came up with the idea, but it took until 2002 for the ship to take sail.

The day is recognized every Sept. 19, but you’ll find Pirate Steve talking like a pirate and strolling the Embarcadero in Morro Bay throughout the year.

"Arrrghh, we should have fun whenever we have the opportunity, I say," said Pirate Steve. "I say, if it isn’t fun, don’t do it."
