Paddle boarding witches haunt Morro Bay harbor

Each Halloween, the witches of Morro Bay paddle out into the harbor at sunset’s bewitching hour. For this annual witches’ paddle, community members dress up as classic Halloween witches, paddle boarding their way through Morro Bay.

Witches Annette Ausseresses and Muffy Johnson have participated for 10 years now.

“We celebrate anything witchy,” said Johnson.

And the rest of the community enjoys the event as well.

“People from restaurants come out and wave and take pictures. We ride our brooms and cackle, and it’s just really great fun,” said Ausseresses. “It’s just a little fun mischief and you know, it’s great to have a costume and wear it and make people laugh and smile and that kind of stuff.”

If this has cast a spell on your interest, the coven is always looking for new members each year.

“We accommodate all witches,” said Johnson.
