Santa Maria dentist offering cash for Halloween candy

Santa Maria Pediatric Dental Group and Orthodontics is taking children’s Halloween candy for a good cause.

The group is participating in a program called Operation Gratitude.

Kids get a dollar for each pound of candy donated, with a maximum of five pounds. The candy is then given to the organization, which delivers care packages to troops, first responders, veterans, new recruit graduates, wounded veterans and their caregivers, and military families.

The dental group has been collecting candy for the past seven years and typically gets between 200 and 300 pounds.

“It must be a huge sacrifice for the kids. I remember when I go door-to-door to collect all that candy, it’s a pretty huge sacrifice, and they get to participate in Operation Gratitude as well,” said Dr. Steven Speaker, an Orthodontist.

You can donate candy on November 1, 2, and 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
