A New York mother gets a Christmas gift she’ll never forget – the sound of her daughter’s heartbeat.

After 20-year-old Madison Barrett was killed in a car accident in August, her parents decided to make her an organ donor, according to NBC News.

Madison’s mother, Chalis, is a nurse and listens to strangers’ heartbeats daily. But she didn’t listen to Madison’s before she said goodbye.

Now, Madison’s heart lives on inside a donor.

So, her father, James, found that donor, recorded Madison’s heartbeat, and put that recording inside a Build a Bear teddy bear to give to his wife as an early Christmas gift.

When Chalis heard Madison’s heartbeat she was overcome with emotion.

“I was just telling her, ‘it’s time for you to rest.’ That was the one thing I’ve always regretted was not listening one last time,” Chalis said. “I heard my daughter’s heartbeat. But not only that, I heard it in somebody that she helped.”

The Barretts are hoping to spread the word about the importance of organ donation.
