Chinese New Year is still being celebrated by residents on the Central Coast. 2019 is the Year of the Pig.

The Lunar New Year began on February 5.

According to Chinese myth, people born in the year of the pig have a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life.

The Cal Poly Lion Dance Team performed a blessing Saturday morning to celebrate the New Year.

“Lion dancing started way back when in China when evil spirits would come and attack the village, the villagers decided they would dress up as big bears to try to scare them away,” said Ren Yee, the Lion Dance Team Captain.

Chinese New Year celebrations can last for several weeks.
