Inspired by a local dentist KSBY reported in early January, another dentist in San Luis Obispo County took on a case to help a child in need.
Dr. Kristen Newsom of Pure Dental in Atascadero operated today on 5-year-old Sofia, who needed anesthesia for extensive dental work.
Sofia is now fully recovered and was able to thank the dentist and the oral health team today alongside her family, who paid nothing for the operation.
“I’m very happy to them and I’m very thankful to Dr. Newsom for helping my daughter because I had been going to several offices and nobody could have done or was willing to do what Dr. Newsom did, so thank you, Dr. Newsom,” said Sofia’s mother Gabriela.
The San Luis Obispo County Health Agency said it also provided a grant to offset some of Dr. Newsom’s costs for the procedure.
According to the county’s Health Agency, very few dentists in the San Luis Obispo County treat young patients with Medi-Cal Dental coverage, especially if it involves such extensive care, close monitoring and general anesthesia.
