California lawmakers have met in person to start the new legislative session.

Lawmakers met Monday to swear in new members and introduce legislation.

The meeting comes on the same day California officials have ordered more than 33 million people to stay home because of a surge of new coronavirus cases.

The new stay-at-home order does not apply to the Sacramento area, where state lawmakers will meet.

The state Senate met at the Capitol while the Assembly met in an NBA arena to ensure they have enough room for social distancing.

Lawmakers plan to introduce legislation addressing evictions and unemployment benefits.
