Clampdown on vaping could send users back toward cigarettes

WASHINGTON (AP) - Experts say the recent clampdown on electronic cigarettes could have unintended consequences, including pushing adult users back to traditional cigarettes.

Only two years ago, e-cigarettes were a small industry viewed as holding great promise for improving public health by weaning smokers off the habit.

But Juul Labs and other vaping companies now face an escalating political backlash that threatens to sweep their products off the market.

The crackdown comes as politicians nationwide scramble to address two separate public health crises tied to vaping. Those problems are underage use among teenagers and a mysterious and sometimes deadly lung ailment.

The new restrictions are poised to wipe out thousands of flavored vaping products that have attracted teens.
