The city of Solvang is reversing its position after initially refusing to enforce the latest shutdown orders. The newly seated mayor and council members are now urging people to comply with the new guidelines.

Former city officials voted to address the closures of outdoor seating byrepurposing those spaces for public use. This would've allowed outdoor dining to continue.

Public health officials were in the city last week informing businesses there could be repercussions if they don't follow the guidelines. Officials can issue a citation of up to $5,000 dollars and revoke their license for up to a year.

Newly-elected Solvang City Mayor Charlie Uhrig said he is not in favor disregarding public health officials.

"I don't think that was a good decision," he said. "And I actually applaud the businesses and the restaurants that we have in town who are actually abiding by the rules."

City Manager Xenia Bradford mentioned during Monday's meeting, should the federal government or the state offer aid, disobeying health guidelines could disqualify Solvang from receiving those funds.
