The 23rd annual Chumash Inter-tribal Pow-Wow at the Live Oak campground in Santa Ynez was held Sunday, giving tribes an opportunity to reunite.
Tribe member Elaine Schneider says it’s a way to remember the people they lost and meet the new babies of the tribes.
Getting to the pow wow now is a lot easier than it was years ago.
“You know, we didn’t have cars then, they didn’t have cars, so they had to walk, sometimes three to four days, sometimes months, so when they all met in a certain area, that’s what they did, they gathered,” Shneider said.
She says her favorite part is seeing all the new members of the tribes and seeing how life continues.
