Young athletes from elementary schools in Paso Robles gathered for a district-wide cross-country championship for varsity teams.

The Pat Butler varsity boys, though, have created their own strategy to set themselves apart from their fellow competition.

A group of fifth grade boys thought of the idea to run together as a pack in order to win races, rather than just looking out for themselves individually. So far, the concept has taken them to great heights since they started putting the plan into action last year.

Their coach, Musik Makarow-Sanchez, loves to see her team do well while also building great character that they can take with them as they grow up.

“They’re third through fifth graders, and most kids just think about themselves for these races and it is an individual sport. So when they started running together, it was just really moving to see them running together and see them wanting to win as a team, not just as an individual,” Makarow-Sanchez said of the students.

The fifth grade team is undefeated in the season so far.
