The San Luis Obispo Police Department has received several calls regarding ‘suspicious’ boxes that are locked to poles throughout the city.

Police Chief Deanna Cantrell wants to assure the public that the boxes are there for a reason. San Luis Obispo’s traffic engineering is using the boxes to count cars as they work to improve traffic flow throughout the city.

San Luis Obispo counts traffic in selected intersections every two years and performs speed surveys, which is required by law.

Data is used for signal timing and other engineering studies.
