The Santa Maria Fire Department is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course this month.

The CERT classes provide attendees with the skills needed to prepare for any type of emergency.

The topics covered include preparedness kits, response planning, first aid, and light search and rescue.

Emergency Services Specialist Roy Dugger says the course helps people learn vital procedures in the case of an emergency.

“How to organize yourself into a team, how to prioritize the things that need to happen first, how to do basic disaster first aid, how to be prepared for disasters, what do you do during a flood, or what do you do during an earthquake or a fire,” Dugger said.

The three-part course will be held at Rancho Buena Vista Estates in Santa Maria starting Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.

Pre-registration is required. To register, email Roy Dugger at rdugger@cityofsantamaria.org or call (805) 925-0951, ext. 2334.
