Special education students in the Santa Maria area took part in their annual bowl-a-thon on Wednesday.
It was at Rancho Bowl. This marked the 24th year of the bowl-a-thon.
About 80 students from the special education classes in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District participated with help from community members.
The bowl-a-thon is held every year in memory of Dick Wicks, a longtime special education coordinator in Santa Maria.
“It used to be a Dick Wick fundraiser memorial but now we just kind of turn it into a fun day, the kids get out, there’s people coming from the district, there’s families, everyone’s getting involved and the kids are just having a really, really good time,” said Rachel Renkoski, certified physical education specialist.
Organizers say the bowl-a-thon helps the students practice social and life skills and interact with others.
