A driver suffered serious injuries after reportedly being impaled by a metal rod that flew into his car.

It happened at about 5 p.m. Friday on eastbound Betteravia Rd. at Telephone Rd. near Santa Maria.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the 49-year-old man was struck in the forehead.

Firefighters extricated him from the vehicle and he was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

A passenger in the vehicle was not injured.

Fire officials say it’s unclear whether the metal rod was kicked up from the roadway or came from another vehicle. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.
