Officers with the Santa Maria Police Department arrested three drivers for operating a vehicle without a proper license in a DUI checkpoint operation yesterday.

Police screened 358 vehicles at the checkpoint located at 800 S. Blosser Rd. between the hours of 6 p.m.and 3 a.m.

The department did not arrest anyone for alcohol or drugs during the operation. Additionally, officers did not arrest any suspects for illegal drugs or other criminal charges.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a DUI can expect consequences of an arrest with a fine of $13,500. This includes fines, fees and DUI classes.

Police remind motorists that driving under the influence does not only mean drinking alcohol and driving. Prescription drugs, marijuana and other drugs can also be impairing.

The department will be also conducting a DUI Saturation Patrol today to continue its commitment to take suspected impaired drivers off streets and highways with the goal of lowering the risk for deaths and injuries.
