Surf clinic aims to empower kids with special needs

Some special kids on the Central Coast got to cool off at the beach during a surf clinic in Cayucos Wednesday.

The lead surf instructor says empowerment was one of the main goals of the day.

The surf camp was hosted by Indo Jax Surf School. They hold surf camps during the summer charity and kids with disabilities.

The idea started, in part, because the owner saw how taking kids into the water affected them in a positive way.

“And he just noticed that whenever you take kids out, with special needs, you know, it is about inclusion. It is something we can show kids – if you can surf, you can do anything,” said Justin Heter, surf instructor.

He says the ocean is healing, and it’s important for these kids to learn to surf because sometimes they are told they can not do certain things and that shouldn’t stop them from trying.
