Students took part in a back to school shopping spree Saturday morning hosted by Kiwanis of Santa Maria.
70 students in total made it out to the Old Navy along Betteravia Road where they were paired up with volunteers who had $100 gift cards to spend on clothes.
"I think it is a huge event to support the kids in our community because a lot of them go back to school without the school supplies and clothing that they need to be prepared and be confident," said Kiwanis Member Rudy Martinez. "It is our pleasure to be able to help the kids and give them that opportunity to be successful.
Juan Castro who is about to start his freshmen year in high school says he had never taken part in an event like this, but was glad he did as he was able to get some back to school basics.
Unit Director for the Mid-Central Coast Boys and Girls Club Josue Rojo says events like these mean a lot for certain members of the community who do not have the resources to offer their children the supplies they need to start school.
"Unfortunately kids are in some situations where they can't be given some stuff so this gives them the opportunity to forget about their worries and it lets them come out... have fun and go shopping... who doesn't like shopping," said Rojo.
Brooke Zimmer who was a volunteer at the event said she was glad to help out because back to school shopping is one of her favorite things to do before starting classes.
"It is really important... this is my favorite part... I love back to school shopping," said Zimmer.
Kids were also given backpacks that had school supplies inside and were then taken to the Chic-fil-A across the way for a complimentary breakfast.
