"Giving thanks to Vets" ceremony happening in Santa Maria

A local band paid tribute to veterans by way of song at a Santa Maria retirement home.

The Riptide Big Band and vocalist Bob nations performed at the Elwin Mussell Senior Citizens Center for a "Giving Thanks to Vets!" ceremony.

Guests donned their patriotic best and danced to live music while enjoying food and drinks.

Attendees got in for free, thanks to the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County.

The Santa Maria Valley Senior Citizens Club presented the event.

The president of the senior club says there were at least ten veterans who stood up at the beginning of the ceremony.

"A lot of them are not around, so that's pretty good to have ten stand up," said Carolyn Cabrera, president of senior club. "It's pretty exciting because they're actually dancing. They're living an active, healthy life, so that's what I encourage and that's why I got involved."

Cabrera encouraged more people to join the senior citizens club at the center so they can enjoy a monthly dinner and make friendships.
