A Baywood Elementary instructional aide for kindergartners is raising money for the school by running a marathon.

Jessica Sandoval of Los Osos ran her third marathon with her friends Patty Ruiz, Esmeralda Pedroza and her brother-in-law Jorge Krede to raise funds for Baywood Elementary's Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

The athletes ran from the elementary school in Los Osos to the Octagon Barn in San Luis Obispo and back.

Sandoval said the PTA has been struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so she thought it would be a great idea to turn her favorite sport into a fundraiser.

"We talked about it, and said, 'OK, let's make it a fundraiser for the school,' because the school doesn't have any events, so PTA needs this," said Sandoval. "We talked to the principal and we went for it."

Ruiz of San Luis Obispo said she is running with Jessica to provide moral support.

"This is not my school, but it's a great cause. I think the PTA could use more money," said Ruiz.

Sandoval created a GoFundMe page on Oct. 7 to collect donations from the San Luis Obispo County community. She hopes to raise $1,500 for Baywood Elementary's PTA.
