A bilingual book by a San Luis Obispo student sold hundreds of copies to help support their local school's art class.

The "You Can Be That Cat" book campaign began in December 2019 by a mother, her son and a team of local parents.

C.L. Smith Elementary is one of three Title One schools in San Luis Obispo, and due to the high number of low-income students, the school receives federal dollars to help all students thrive academically.

Principal Aaron Black says those funds do not cover enrichment opportunities, including art classes.

This inspired PTA member Lindsey Haring and her son to create a book and use it for a fundraising campaign.

The goal was to raise $30,000 to help support the enrichment activities for the next five years.

On the campaign website, they announced they exceeded their goal, reaching $35,436.

Organizers say these funds will cover 11 art classes every year for 400 students over the next five years.
