A new superintendent will likely be leading the Lucia Mar Unified School District at the start of the next school year.

District officials announced Tuesday the appointment of Dr. Paul Fawcett to the position after a unanimous vote by the district’s board of education.

“We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fawcett as the next leader of TEAM Lucia Mar.” said Board President Vicki Meagher in a press release. “We are confident that he has the right combination of skills and experience to lead our district. He stood out among an impressive group of applicants at the conclusion of a statewide search.”

Fawcett has been with Lucia Mar since 2017, currently serving as the assistant superintendent of human resources.

“I’m both honored and humbled by this opportunity,” Fawcett said in a press release. “I’m looking forward to collaboratively working with our board, current leadership, and staff to serve our district’s students, parents and community. Staying true to our motto, ‘Our Kids First,’ we’ll remain focused and committed to ensuring that all students are provided with the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential in school and beyond.”

The appointment comes after current Superintendent Andy Stenson announced his resignation back in February and requested to be reassigned within the district.

More information on an employment agreement for Fawcett and transition plans is expected to be presented at the board’s May 19 meeting.
