A donor breast milk drive is happening Saturday at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Donations made during the drive will go to the Mother’s Milk Bank and help not only babies in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit but also those in other hospitals and families.
“Breast milk is important for all babies, especially premature babies in the NICU, and nothing else provides the same benefits. In addition to nutrition, it supports the baby’s developing immune system and provides the baby with protection against infections,” organizers say.
The Mother’s Milk Bank is the only licensed non-profit milk bank in California.
Sierra Vista says, due to demand, the milk bank needs 20 new donors each day.
The drive is happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s auditorium.
