Cal Poly is hosting some of the most promising Olympic hopefuls this weekend.

Today and tomorrow, the university is the location for the final national qualifying event for the USA Pentathlon 2020 Olympic team.

The pentathlon puts athletes through five different events: fencing, shooting, swimming, riding and cross-country running.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to host an event of this magnitude on our campus and support potential Team USA athletes,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong on Cal Poly's website. “This is a significant opportunity to showcase Cal Poly and our amazing San Luis Obispo County community on a global stage.”

Up to 50 athletes will compete for a spot on the USA Pentathlon 2020 Olympic team this weekend. The womens' events began today, and the men will compete tomorrow.

Today's next event: women's equestrian at 2 p.m. (Oak Park Equestrian)
