Cal Poly students start their fall quarter in exactly one week.

On Thursday, Sept. 12, President Jeffrey Armstrong got the new academic year started a little early at the university's Convocation event.

Armstrong spoke to faculty and staff about several topics, including the school's diversity, its nationwide rankings, and where the university is headed this year and into the future. He also highlighted ways to keep the college community united.

"Everyone does better on a campus that encourages intercultural competency, empathy, and mutual respect, or as our faculty and staff and student thought leaders have taught us, love, empathy, respect must stand united," he said.

Several awards were also handed out to faculty and staff who've shown outstanding leadership.

Move-in begins for students this weekend and the first day of the fall quarter is Sept. 19.
