Two Cal Poly construction management students are seeking funds to finish up a senior project designed to enhance the university's rodeo program.

Ryan Fiorio and Timothy Smith partnered with Cal Poly's Rodeo Program and head coach Ben Londo more than a year ago to create a rodeo observation deck that is designed to record the practice runs of student riders.

Soloshot cameras will be mounted on the platform to automatically track a rider in motion to record the runs for later analysis.

The 1,200-square-foot deck can hold up to 75 people in addition to the recording equipment.

The students need $17,000 for the project and have raised $11,000 for the materials so far.

The students said construction during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging.

“The fast-changing environment and economy significantly reduced our ability to fundraise as well as complete many other tasks,” Smith said. “We needed to raise close to $17,000 and persevered to raise the funds by reaching out to our contacts made through Cal Poly and summer internships.”

Donations to the senior project can be made through Cal Poly's giving site.
